Me and my team of corrections officers are always doing everything we can to make certain the inside of this jail is as safe. If any types of contraband can get to the inmates, each person that either resides or works behind these prison walls is in grave danger. To that point, we have made a systematic approach to weeding out illegal contraband in the jail that we stick to each and every day.
The reason we were asked to increase our efforts was because my superiors said the last two months they saw an increase in inmate violence to the point something was not normal. Unless we were slacking in our duties, the head office could not understand why the increase, and they wanted answers fast. When we get in a meeting like that, we know that we had better find what they are looking for or it could mean all of our jobs. We stepped up our efforts and decided to try and locate the source immediately.
One of the tools that makes our lives much easier when we are trying to monitor inmate activity is the inmate call monitoring system. When Securus Technologies installed this system, we were one of 2,600 jails that now had the power to slow down the flow of contraband into our jail. This Dallas-based monitoring company has 1,000 employees all working towards the objective of making the world safe, that was exactly what we hoped.
It wasn’t but hours after we began getting chatter about prescription drugs that we were able to make a frightening connection. Each inmate that mentioned the same prescription drugs, kept mentioning a person they were scoring from. We thought it was a visitor at first, until we discovered one of our own was selling their medication to inmates for a hefty price.
